Suggestions to improve WebLearn

Dear WebLearn Users. This is our ‘user voice’ feedback forum. We welcome any ideas you may like to submit in terms of a ‘WebLearn wish list’. You can also search for, comment on and vote for ideas submitted by other WebLearn users. We will consider all suggestions in the light of feasibility, user demand, and available development resources. You will be able to check the status of an idea at any time.

What system enhancements would you like to see in WebLearn?

  1. Allow maintainers to delete conversations in forums without deleted message showing

    Currently when forum conversations are deleted you see a greyed out message 'This message has been deleted 1 unread of 1 message'. If a number of conversations have been deleted by users testing out forums before the site is open to students then there is a long list of these error messages. A method of deleting conversations completely from the forum would be good.

    • Optimize WebLearn for mobile devices and tablets

      Browsing and search on mobile devices is extremely difficult. I believe creating a dedicated mobile app for WebLearn is unnecessary - but the access interface must improve for it to work well on mobile phones and tablets.

      • Sign-up tool doesn't work well with multiple tabs open

        The sign up system doesn't play well with tabs. For example on the sign up list if one attempts to open a meeting / class in a new tab the new tab just contains the list of meetings again. This is particularly frustrating if one has many classes with many conflicting time slots.

        This looks to be caused by a limitation in the weblearn system, however a simple workaround would be to use fragment identifier in the in the href of the 'a' tag and then check the fragment identifier on the page load in javascript.

        • Duplicate poll questions

          Compared to Surveys, Polls are tedious to set up because they don't allow the use of existing answer scales. However, Surveys don't allow participants to see the results before the closing date of the Survey.

          To make Polls more user-friendly to set up, could you add the ability to duplicate Polls (questions) so that when you want the same set of answers you can simply copy the poll and then edit the question, rather than having to go through the process of adding all the answers as well. Alternatively, a layout more like multi-choice questions in Tests, with everything (question…

          • Surveys tool bug: checkbox 'All roles may take the survey' reverts to being checked

            When creating a new survey, in the Survey settings it's possible to uncheck the box 'All roles may take the survey'. This would be very useful to stop site tutors and admin from receiving irrelevant reminders about surveys which they're not supposed to be completing. However, although you can uncheck this box, the next time you look at the settings, the box is checked again, and email reminders get sent out to all site members, regardless of role.

            • Site stats report on non-member usage

              Could an option please be added to Site Stats to run a report of site usage by non-members of a site of Resources / assets which are publicly viewable / viewable by all Oxford users? Currently it is only possible to run a report of usage by "All Roles", then manually remove site members. Alternatively "role" could be included as a field in the report output, which would make it easier to filter down to those users for whom this field is blank. Many thanks!

              • 'Split' conversations in Forums

                Add the option of 'splitting' a conversation in the Forums, i.e. when the discussion moves into an area that's worthy of its own conversation, or simply diverges from the intended subject, allow the tutor to move that post and its children to create a new conversation, as in Moodle.

                  We need an option to 'clear all' when editing ad hoc groups! We also need the option of deleting ad hoc groups.

                  • Improved site 'Search' function

                    The WebLearn search function appears to only search within Resources, and not within the text of Lessons pages. It doesn't seem to return any results from Lessons pages which, alongside Forums, are the most likely places that I and my students will want to search.

                    Also, it would also be great to be able to select multiple sites to search within, rather than 'This site' or 'All sites', especially if you a member of many sites. For example, I might want to restrict my search to multiple instances of sites on a particular topic (taught yearly/termly), to find a student…

                      From the markbook to have access to comments, marks and any attachements for feedback on an assignment, currently you have to go to the assignment tool to download a feedback form attached to the student assignment. Basically the Markbook should support attachments.

                      • Provide place (for administator) to attach a standard formative feedback form when creating an assignment

                        When creating a new assignment, you can provide instructions and attachments for students. It would be good if an administrator could attach a blank, formatted feedback form to be completed by all markers. A copy of this blank form must be available inside each student folder when you do a bulk download, so that it is easy for the marker to complete and save the proforma in the correct folder, prior to upload back to WebLearn.

                          It would be helpful if it was possible to copy an existing sign up with user-defined time slots and change the date. These are the most complex to set up, so this would save a lot of staff time.

                          If it's not possible/too complex to do for sign-ups with user-defined slots on multiple days, could it be done for a meeting that only takes place on a single day?

                          Being able to modify the user-defined time slots in the copied meeting (add some, delete some, change length) would be useful.

                          • Watch individual topics rather than entire Forums tool

                            It would be great to have more fine control over which forum topics alert me by email when a new topic is posted. Some topics (e.g. asking for assignment advice or troubleshooting software problems) require a rapid response, while others can wait until I check the forums online rather than clogging up my email inbox. Obviously a half-way step to this would be to make email subject lines more informative, as is planned (low priority). I expect this is also low priority, but the flexibility would help WL to approach Moodle in its ease of incorporating it into my daily…

                            • Survey Tool: Change ownership for multiple/all surveys

                              It would be great if the Survey tool (My Surveys page) had checkboxes so that you could select multiple (or all) surveys and change ownership (or close/any other appropriate actions) for those selected. This would be similar to in Resources, where you can delete, copy, move etc multiple items together. Being able to do the same for templates (Change owner/remove) en masse would also be useful.

                              • Survey Tool: Automatically update extension date to closing date

                                It would be handy if the extension date was automatically updated to be same as the closing date, when the closing date is set to later than the extension date. Obviously if the extension date was already after the closing date that you set, it should be left as it is.

                                • Survey Tool: PDF Report without comments

                                  It would be useful to be able to download the PDF of survey results (with the bar charts for scale/multiple choice questions) without the comments. Some administrators prefer to send out results without the comments, or with only selected comments, but like being able to send out the bar charts. Although it is possible to remove/modify the comments in the PDF using Acrobat, it is not that easy and requires a software purchase. Downloading in Excel makes removing comments easy, but does not provide the 'easy-to-read' charts of results.

                                  • Survey Tool: Enter dates manually when scheduling

                                    It would be great if you could enter dates manually when scheduling a survey, rather than being forced to use the date picker. This is especially true when setting the closing date (and therefore having to set the extension date) a long time in the future. Currently you have to click through lot of months to get to the date you want for the closing date, then do it again for the extension date. It would be much easier if you could just type in the date, then copy and paste it into the extension date.

                                    • Improve user interface for editing repeated schedule bookings

                                      At the moment, it is relatively easy to make repeated bookings in calendars (schedule tool) but it requires substantial mental dexterity to edit them. In particular, it could be made clearer that a group of bookings is being edited (to avoid an editor clicking on one part way through and shifting the whole set - perhaps use a different colour?) and, when a single booking is removed from the group, the master booking still shows information about the original pattern and doesn't note the exceptions.

                                        In Email sender (Mailtool) instead of having a brief onscreen confirmation of your recipients that then disappears when you send the message, is it possible to have this information stored and accessible somewhere please, e.g. in the Email Archive tool?

                                        • Choose which maintainers receive "Survey created" notifications

                                          Currently, when you assign a survey to a site, all of the maintainers in that site will receive an email notifying them that the survey has been created, which can result in lots of maintainers getting lots of notifications that don't really mean anything to them. There is no way to switch off this notification.

                                          It would be useful to be able to either switch it off, as I'm not sure it's that useful anyway, or choose which maintainers receive it.
